[HIGH FIVE] We gave a High Five to Jihad Watt (@jihad_watt), a fitness instructor at Cut Seven, Equinox, and The Lab.

WellcommDC: Where do you work…out?

Jihad Watt: I coach group fitness classes at The Lab, Cut Seven, and Equinox. I also workout at all of these places throughout the week.

WDC: What does “wellness” mean to you?

JW: To me, wellness means being physically, mentally, and emotionally sound so that you’re ready for whatever life may throw at you. I truly believe that the mental fortitude you gain from pushing yourself in the gym translates to your life outside of the gym and helps you change and grow as a person. For me, it’s the idea of working hard and playing hard so that you can enjoy a good quality of life for as long as possible.

WDC: What are your wellness goals over the next twelve months?

JW: One of my wellness goals is to get under an hour at Hyrox NYC with my doubles partner in June. After that, I really want to focus on getting stronger and increasing my squat, bench press, and deadlift numbers.

WDC: Who are some people who inspire you, motivate you, or keep you accountable when it comes to your wellness?

JW: Some of the people that inspire me are Alex Shabo (@alshabes), my friends out in Cali, Giles Chapman (@xclusive_speed) and Daniel Gutierrez (@dj_gutierrez99), and Chris Perrin (@chrisperrin7). Shout out to my guy Marcus Lowe (@marcusxlowe) for keeping me motivated with his smack talk. I would say I’m kept accountable by all the different communities I work out with. They all make me want to show up because it’s always a good time when I get to see everyone.

WDC: What advice would you share with someone looking to change their wellness routine?

JW: I’d say find something that is fun and you would enjoy. It’s easy to stick to things that you find enjoyable whether that be a community that uplifts you or a certain type of workout that makes you feel great. It’ll make it easier to stay consistent!

[CLASS REVIEW] We boxed it out with Evelyn (@evey_j4)  for a heart-pumping HIIT workout at Rumble Boxing DC

Evelyn’s Monday night class is an absolute vibe! For those who love a low-light “club” feel in a workout class, Evelyn’s class is a must-try. Evelyn’s energy was so contagious — she really kept the class motivated to keep pushing to build strength, power, and endurance. Her exhilarating playlist and quick transitions kept the class pumped up the whole way through.

For those who may be intimidated to try boxing for the first time, Evelyn is an incredible coach who guides you through the workout every step of the way. Get your boxing gloves on and give Evelyn’s class a try! [HT Jude Al-Hmoud (@judealhmoud)]

[WHERE WE WORK…OUT] We invited some newbies to check out one of the hardest workout classes we’ve encountered in DC, Cut Seven. The joke was on us, as our first-timer friends outworked and outran us during this high-energy morning class led by Alex Shabo (@alshabes) that reminds us of the fun feeling of camaraderie we remember from sports team practices of our youth. We even snagged a high five (the literal kind) from Cut Seven Cofounder Chris Perrin (@chrisperrin7), who happened to be in class with us. Following up class with a warm brew around the corner at La Colombe, and our day was off to a great start. [A Cut Above The Rest]

[COMMUNITY] B5 Sports Center Co-Owner Corey Gray (@coreyagray) is having a moment. We can’t help but praise his amazing work from the SPIN THE BLOCK LAUNCH - DC event where PYNRS and REI teamed up to provide some great vibes. [HT Mona Laviñia Garcia (@monalavinia)]

[THIS SATURDAY] cp:yoga and Yoga With The Redhead (YWTR) are teaming up for a co-led class in partnership with RON DAVID this Saturday, April 6th, at noon. This class benefits the Becky’s Fund and their mission to end domestic violence, so get your ticket while you still can and head on over to Union Market. [Move For A Cause]
