[HIGH FIVE] We gave a High Five to Kat Torre @distrikt_pt, a physical therapist at Pure Sports DC @PureSportsDC.
WellcommDC: Where do you work … out?
Kat Torre: I am primarily a Physical Therapist at Pure Sports DC (@puresportsdc), but I also coach fitness classes as well! I coach a metabolic conditioning class at Reformation Fitness (@reformationfitness) on Tuesdays and I also coach a mobility class at Cut Seven (@cutseven) on Sundays so you can always find me at either location. In my PT practice, I mostly work with patients that are active but have issues "returning to sport", whether that's running, lifting, participating in a HIIT class, or just getting back into a walking routine. I'm also a certified running coach and help a lot of patients with their form and training.
When I'm not coaching or working as a physical therapist, you can find me taking classes at Reformation Fitness, Cut Seven or trying new studios in the area. I'm also a runner so you might catch me on the Metropolitan Branch Trail or running on the Mall.
WDC: What does “wellness” mean to you?
KT: Wellness means having a good connection between your mind and your body and listening to both when they are telling you something. As active individuals, one of the struggles we have is that you get aches, pains, and injuries as part of working out. When you are hurting, you need to listen to that part of you that is in pain and take a rest. If that injury continues to persist, you need to go take care of it, whether it's seeing a Physical Therapist like me, an MD, or some other health and wellness provider.
WDC: What motivates you to take care of your wellness?
KT: To keep up with all my patients! My goal is to keep running, lifting, biking, and taking fitness classes for as long as I live, and I want to set a great example to all of my patients so that they are inspired to do the same thing.
WDC: What are your wellness goals over the next twelve months?
KT: I have the Cherry Blossom 10 miler coming up in April, and though it's not a twelve month goal, I'm planning to run the NYC marathon in 2025. It has been on my bucket list for years!
Besides that, continuing to work on building strength and being better about listening to my body when I'm dealing with injuries are my other goals for the next year.
WDC: What advice would you share with someone looking to change their wellness routine?
Don't be afraid to try something new, at any age! I didn't start consistently running until I was about 30. Another thing I try to remind my patients is to manage their expectations. The first time you start a new class, routine, or workout you probably aren't going to be the best at it, but that's why you keep showing up. Don't get frustrated! We've all been that new person in the room, and everyone understands where you're coming from.
