[HIGH FIVE] We gave a High Five to Rachaelle "ChaCha" King (@king_chachaaa), a DMV area yoga teacher.
WellcommDC: Where do you work…out?
Rachaelle King: My home is teaching at SoulFire Collective Yoga in Bethesda, MD. I also host a slow flow class monthly at Squadstyle Work n' Wellness once a month in Frederick, MD. I love taking classes with any of my fellow teachers, and I've recently gotten into pilates with the wonderful Whit Murray (@hiwhit) at Alo Yoga in DC. Extend Yoga in Rockville is another wonderful studio I've fallen in love with. I appreciate any studio that has space and opportunity to be myself.
WDC: What does “wellness” mean to you?
RK: To be well. It's a micro and macro concept. You zoom in, and it's the idea of health, of good communication, of feeling whole. You zoom out, it's the idea of feeling connected to community, to walk in your higher purpose, to give generously and be filled with gratitude for things big and small. Wellness, to me, is more than a feeling or an idea. It's a continuous cycle of learning and relearning and the pursuit of living authentically, whether it's the food you eat, the things you spend your free time with, the people you surround yourself with, the small steps you take to define what wellness means to you. Wellness asks, "Is this right for me?" and if not, "How can I adjust?"
WDC: What motivates you to take care of your wellness?
RK: My background in mental health definitely motivates me to take care of my wellness and to look out for other’s wellness, too. It's really an honor to hold space for people to feel whatever they're feeling, come as they are, and also know that I'm not so alone in any struggle. If I want people to show up authentically and just as they are, no matter where they are on their wellness journey, I have to be transparent in my pursuit of taking care of my wellness, too. That motivates me to take good care.
WDC: What are your wellness goals over the next twelve months?
RK: My only goal is to build more community. I like the sentiment, "You are welcome here." I want to try new studios, learn from new teachers, go to any classes throughout the area with old friends and make new friends! I like meaningful experiences. My battery definitely fills when I get to learn something new or get to connect with someone. We're all just in it together!
WDC: What advice would you share with someone looking to change their wellness routine?
RK: Start where you are! Wellness is what YOU make it. Maybe going to a new studio is intimidating or inaccessible: take a walk, go with a friend, journal to gain some insight, try an at-home app, swap just ONE bag of Sour Patch Kids for a bag of broccoli… Your life is your space: make it what you want. You can change things up anytime you want.
