[HIGH FIVE] We gave a High Five to Carlyn Peccini (Nordeman) (@calmwithcarlyn), a yoga and meditation instructor,  senior coach at [solidcore], and a certified personal trainer.

WellcommDC: Where do you work…out?

Carlyn Peccini: Right now, you can find me on the mic at [solidcore] Tysons and teaching yoga classes at Life Time Clarendon, VIDA Ballston, and tons of community classes in the Navy Yard. I also offer private and small group classes and post free yoga classes to my YouTube channel on a weekly basis. I regularly workout at all the places I teach because I love and believe in the communities and the formats. You can find me taking 4-5 [solidcore] classes a week, hitting weights in the gym, and incorporating yoga and pilates as well. I also love the new Rumble Boxing in Falls Church.

I'm also excited to announce that I will be working at a new yoga and pilates studio coming to the Navy Yard in DC soon: LUMA Wellness Studio brings yoga and pilates to the Navy Yard with infrared heat and red light therapy, a unique concept to the east coast. In the next few months, you'll find me hosting free classes with them in anticipation for grand opening so be on the lookout! You can follow LUMA on instagram @lumawellnessstudio and subscribe to the newsletter at lumawellnessstudio.com

WDC: What does wellness mean to you?

CP: My definition of wellness has changed over the years, but I now view wellness as a holistic concept that incorporates both mind and body, among other things. I deeply believe that you can't take care of your body without also taking care of your mind. Parts of my wellness routine, like meditation and breathwork, taking time to read, and getting enough sleep, are just as important as the workouts I do each week. There’s no single way to define wellness because it’s a way of life that will look and feel different for each individual. The goal of wellness should be to create a lifestyle that has a positive impact on both your physical and mental health.

WDC: What are your wellness goals over the next twelve months?

CP: This past June, I transitioned out of a career in education and got married! Life has been a whirlwind. In this next chapter, my wellness goals are to move more slowly and intentionally. Being in education full-time while teaching fitness about 20 hours a week had me chugging coffees, rushing through some of my workouts, and not always getting proper recovery. One of my biggest goals right now is to be consistent with my rest days and to feel comfortable in those moments of rest. We often hear fitness instructors and coaches tell us to "listen to our bodies," but with all the mind chatter and the noise of social media, that can be one of the hardest things to do. As a performance goal, I'm also working toward a squat PR.

WDC: Who are some people who inspire you, motivate you, or keep you accountable when it comes to your wellness?

CP: There are so many inspirational people out there, and one of the great things about social media is the ability to connect with like-minded individuals. I firmly believe that inspiration and motivation are like flames, and at the end of the day, you are truly the only one who can keep them burning. I try to dig deep internally for motivation and inspiration, but I also love all my colleagues that I've worked with over the years and enjoy taking their classes daily! I always recommend Caren Plummer's (@care_plummer) yoga class and Mimi Kasparian’s (@mimikasparian_) [solidcore] class. Both have been in this space longer than I have and are a wealth of knowledge. My husband is my biggest cheerleader; he keeps me motivated and holds me accountable. Our amazing partnership has been pivotal in my wellness and healing journey.

Most importantly, I’m deeply inspired by my clients who show up for themselves day in and day out. Community is a huge source of motivation and a great support system to lean on, both when things get tough and when it’s time to celebrate wins.

WDC: What advice would you share with someone looking to change their wellness routine?

CP: Start small. Consistency is what breeds results. Remember that any change starts with your thoughts—don't wait until you feel better to make a change or start a routine. Know that moving your body or starting a routine is what’s going to make you feel better!
