[HIGH FIVE] We gave a High Five to Caren Plummer (@care_plummer), a Community Builder at cp:yoga and Instructor at Equinox.
WellcommDC: Where do you work…out?
Caren Plummer: When I'm not selling software, you can catch me leading vinyasa yoga classes at three separate Equinox locations in the DC area: Sports Club, Anthem Row, and Wisconsin Ave. Seven days a week, you'll find me breaking a sweat at different gyms and studios throughout DC. Special shout-out to the gyms where I feel most at home: Rumble Boxing, CUT SEVEN, and NUBOXX. Shout-out to some of my favorite coaches and trainers: Branden Allen (@_b_allen), Mona Laviñia Garcia (@monalavinia), Chris S. (@cbsev), Clarence Stanfield (@clarence_stanfield), Jihad Watt (@jihad_watt), Marcus Lowe (@marcusxlowe), and Eric Buckner (@enigmaboxing). I personally plugged into the DC fitness community because of how impactful the community has been for me in developing meaningful friendships, helping me process grief, and generally supporting my purpose of building community. I'm always happy to connect folks within this community.
WDC: What does “wellness” mean to you?
CP: Wellness is a holistic concept to me. I see it in six parts; physical, emotional, mental, spiritual, relational, and financial. At the end of the day, the time you spend at the gym or what you choose to put in your body can only take care of a portion of your overall wellness. It ends up being more about how you choose to strike a balance between life's obligations and the lifestyle you want to live. If your goal is wellness, I believe you have to address all six parts thoughtfully and intentionally, otherwise you'll only find yourself part of the way there.
WDC: What motivates you to take care of your wellness?
CP: Gratitude. Every day that I wake up and I'm able to move my body is a blessing. I outwardly express gratitude for this each morning and each night before I head to bed. Having experienced a lot of loss in my life, I know how short life can be, so I have no desire to take any day for granted.
WDC: What are your wellness goals over the next twelve months?
CP: This year, I've set a movement goal to log 1,000 miles running/walking, for no good reason other than to have something to keep me moving, and I've made a personal commitment to myself to cultivate a consistent meditation and breathwork practice to help regulate my nervous system and support healthy body function.
WDC: What advice would you share with someone looking to change their wellness routine?
CP: Accountability is the most important part of changing up your routine. The first thing you need to determine is if you are a person that can hold themselves accountable or if they need an accountability buddy. Both will work, and neither is better than the other. Once you have that figured out, write down your desired changes and start by setting daily goals tied to these behaviors. Stick to this routine for 30 days. You'll find that you will be building new habits through repetition and consistency. Change is never easy, which is why creating a real practice of accountability through your own self-reflection or via an accountability buddy can help you stay close to your goals, and taking those goals day-by-day will eliminate the task from feeling daunting or overwhelming.
