[HIGH FIVE] We gave a High Five to Nazinga Thomas (@carnelian.zing_), an artist, sound healer and trainer at Barry’s DC.

WellcommDC: Where do you work…out?

Nazinga Thomas: For me, when I’m really trying to tap in and push myself physically, I head to OneLife Fitness, a local spot in NE DC. It’s a great environment for lifting heavy and staying focused. Outside of that, you can catch me at Barry’s – the energy there is unmatched, and it’s always a good time.

WDC: What does wellness mean to you?

NT: Wellness, to me, is about acknowledging all aspects of yourself—body, mind, and spirit—at a depth that allows you to understand what each part needs in order to thrive. For where I’m at in life right now, my physical wellness is nurtured through consistent movement, my mental wellness through intentional stillness, and my spiritual wellness through creativity and self-expression.

WDC: What are your wellness goals over the next twelve months?

NT: Over the next few months, my focus is on finding even more ways to pour into myself. I believe the more I invest in my own well-being, the more I’ll be able to pour into others, both personally and professionally. It’s all about continuous growth and deepening the connection to myself.

WDC: Who are some people who inspire you, motivate you, or keep you accountable when it comes to your wellness?

NT: What keeps me most accountable is energetic responsibility—showing up for life the way I encourage others to. If I’m going to challenge people to dig deeper in their fitness, meditation, or self-care practices, I need to lead by example. I hold myself to that standard, and it’s what keeps me grounded and focused on my own wellness journey.

WDC: What advice would you share with someone looking to change their wellness routine?

NT: I would say: don’t overwhelm yourself by trying to change everything all at once. Start small—pick one or two things to work on, build consistency with those, and once you’re comfortable, graduate to more. There’s no rush in wellness. It’s a journey, not a sprint, so take your time, enjoy the process, and trust that you’ve got it.

[REVIEW] SoulFire Collective in Arlington welcomed the WellcommDC community to their 11 am Power Flow 60 class with Emma-Kate Swann (@aussie.ek). This hot yoga experience was truly one-of-a-kind: the dimly lit room illuminated by vibrant neon blue light created a judgement-free zone. Heated to 90 degrees with energizing house beats bumping, the class seamlessly balanced structure and creativity, allowing yogis to personalize their flows after learning each sequence. Our crew left feeling empowered, invigorated, and ready to take on the day. The studio was equipped with yoga mats, showers, and roomy lockers. A word to the wise: pack ice water and an extra towel—you’ll need both! Coverage provided by Reilly Knecht (@reillykathrynn), who attended and shared her experiences for the WellcommDC community. [Set Your Soul On Fire]

[PRIDE] It’s brutally cold in DC right now, with icy sidewalks and freezing temperatures making outdoor runs nearly impossible. Let’s warm up by pretending it is almost summer and register for the DC Front Runners Pride Run 5K, happening Friday, June 7th at 7 pm. Celebrate community with a scenic summer evening race down Pennsylvania Avenue and an epic post-race party. [We Miss The Sun]

[SHOUTS] Please tell Jasmine Bowden (@jasminebowdenfitness) we can’t wait to see her back in the Red Room. It finally warmed up enough for Slow & Steady Run Club | DC to get back out there. Speaking of running, how does Juan Marcano (@juanmrcn) gain more runners every week? Tell Jackie Mortillaro (@jackiemortillaro_) and the Barry’s team on a successful Navy Yard opening. Give the OG Quintin Fortes (@qmf_fitness) a high five for an incredible Barry’s run and wish him well as he joins the Fairfax County Fire Service. And we all know the amazing Kristyn Gaines (@kristyngaines15) will do big things in San Francisco. #TeamKG
